Hola Granola

The Henry saga continues....

He's still "sick".  This lovely congestion unfortunately is becoming the new norm for him and that makes me sad.  Sometimes when he gets upset he just cries and says "I'm just crying because I don't like colds!"  Nothing is coming out of his nose.  It's just there.  You can hear it bubbling around.  His voice is more nasal than before and his hearing is off a bit.  Whatever it is, has moved in, hung pictures on the walls, put out the welcome mat and thinks it is there to stay.  Three nights ago was a bad night for him too.  The every-few-seconds coughing came back.  I think he was dripping.

Mark and I are really trying everything we can at the moment.  We have an ENT and another allergist appointment coming up.  I have some major deep cleaning plans coming asap.  We have also taken Henry off milk (and where possible wheat) to see if he may have a sensitivity to it.  Yes, I know the blood work came back fine but I have a few great sources that are educating me on the ins and outs of allergies and sensitivities.  We're just trying it.  Henry used to be a regular "Sid The Science Kid" watcher so I've explained it to him as an experiment to see if it helps his coughs go away.  I am amazed with how well he's participating.  Zero complaints....even from a kid who probably had yogurt running in his veins.

So now I find myself reading labels left and right, shopping in different isles and in different stores.  To quote my sister who has a son with severe allergies "Thank goodness for the vegans!!"  Amen to that sister friend!  They have paved the granola way and made my life so much easier.   Henry can still chow down on a grill "cheese" sandwich and a slice of home made za.  I found many other gluten and dairy free every-day foods like sour cream for Henry's favorite - tacos.  And just yesterday I found dairy free mac & cheese (who knew? will let you know how that turns out).  And he hasn't complained one bit about the tastes of anything.  I wish I could hug a vegan right now!  Someone fetch me a vegan...

But aside from all this no-milk-ness, I have been slowly merging (even before this recent switch) to "team organic".  Sloooowly.  And it feels good in a lot of ways.   I will probably never fully convert and you will hopefully never hear me on a soap box.  I am just enjoying the exploration of healthier alternatives.   And I do realize that not everything organic is healthy.  An organic cookie is still a cookie...and I love cookies.

Hopefully in a few weeks we will have more information/results/answers....any of those will do.  I just don't want my kid feeling just "meh" his whole life.

  1. I have really bad sinus allergies from environmental stuff. Dustmight, pollen, pesticides ect. As a renter and a person who like the great outdoors there is only so much one can do to control your environment. One thing that has worked for me is nasel rinses. I use a netti pot but for Henrey a squeese bottle might be easier. If you can't find the source and medication isn't working, this might be an option. When I have been sick I rinse every night with saline about a hour before bed and within a few days I am symptom free. Good luck Kim and Henry. May the Force be with you.
